• different kinds of lead-free solders. Not really happy with Sn99.3Cu0.7 solder, but I've used Sn100Ni+ lately and that's pretty great.

• Some guys are on a forum are recommending .015 (or ~0.025, 0.28 - 0.71mm).

• Carlsons Lab recommends .032 for through hole (some SMD, 0603,0805, 1206, middle of the road. At 0402 just use iron tip with external flux (so size doesn't matter?), 0.020 as being good for SMD and ok for through hole

• Type R rosin, no activators needs a clean surface. RMA middle, most are no clean. RA (maybe as liquid flux).

• Kinds of Solder (RO=rosin, RE=resin, OR=organic, IN=inorganic)

• Kester 44=RA, Kester 285=RMA, Stannol also a good brand

• Kester's spec sheet for "44" (RA) flux that says it does not actually require cleaning.

That said, MG Chemicals 835 (liquid RA), is available in small bottles that are reasonably priced which is very useful for hobbyists (125ml and 1L sizes), and is easily found in North America, the UK and EU. Not sure about other markets.  :-// Kester flux is excellent stuff IME (186, 186-18, and 1544 are all liquid & rosin based). Unfortunately, Kester only offers their fluxes in disposable pens or large containers (1gal & larger, up to 55gal drum). It's readily available in the US, and although can be had in the UK/EU, it's expensive as it's usually shipped from the US from what I've seen (Farnell).

• For hobbyist use (parts & PCB's sit around for years), RMA would be the minimum I'd recommend, and on occasion, RA would be more appropriate to have on hand (or equivalent NC). Best to keep a little of both types of flux on hand if at all possible (pens, small bottles, ...).

For paste, Kester RF741 is a modified rosin no-clean that's very nice to use (comes in a syringe). Amtech is supposed to be good as well (also a syringe), but the real stuff is hard to find as their distribution is nearly non-existent (highly counterfeited too).

FWIW, I usually use liquid in a refillable brush pen as it's less expensive and gives me better control than the disposable pens.]
