Revision as of 03:48, 21 May 2017

Needs

  • USB keyboard?
  • HDMI monitor? I think there a HDMI->DVI Adaptor around? Check boxes down end of the house.
  • Currently around a 100GB of photos, etc...
  • A microphone/headset for Kahlil. Bluetooth would probably be an idea. Leave this seperate for now. Might need blutooth support on mobo but that dongle I ordered for myself should work.
  • Dualboot Windows/Linux

Hello, need some feedback for your computer. Currently it looks to be about $1200. Although I could skimp a bit if you want to save a couple of hundred (it would still do what you wan't, just slower and more annoyingly)

I looked at the NUCs first but they didn't seem worth it. They are ones that are like a bigger hockey puck so they don't take up space, but they are not upgradeable and they where costing a bit anyway (probably about $800 for an ok one, although could probably drop a few hundred dollars for a still usable, but slower one). The other issue is they don't support a dedicated graphics card which would mean gaming wouldn't be much on them (Minecraft/Terraria type games would be ok, but fancy 3d games would be too slow).

Probably the better route is for a smallish computer (mini-itx).

The main advantage to mitx is many of the cases can support a graphics card which could allow Kahlil to play games in the future, but is smaller than a normal desktop setup. I haven't included a graphics for the system currently since it can be brought later ($300-$1000). Might also be able to use an old one of mine if I upgrade at some point.

Having said that, there are also some mitx cases that are much smaller but aren't big enough to fit a graphics card. It would take less space and would also save $165 on a power supply as they come with a basic one. They are a little bit bigger than a NUC, it could probably be stuck behind your monitor. But without the graphics card, gaming becomes limited.

For the ones with space for a graphics card, there is a choice of cases, space-wise and aesthetics. They basically all come in black for the most part.

There are tower cases, box cases, nogpu-cases. There are also some slightly larger tower cases.

The tower cases would be about 2/3 as tall as your current one and half as wide (think VCR). The tower cases can also be put on their side (you could probably put your monitor on top of them). The box ones are like a big shoebox, basically they are a bit wider but shorter than the towers. The larger tower cases would be the width of the box ones with the height of a tower.

  • Here's a picture of a tower case for size (this one is the Fractal Design Node 202) - img
  • Here's a picture of a box case (Cooler Master 110 Elite) - img
  • Here's a picture showing the relative sizes for most of the cases - img

You can see a list of the cases here, most of the cases on there should be fine. https://www.pccasegear.com/category/25_1119/cases/mini-itx-cases

The following tower cases seem good:

  • SilverStone Raven RVZ02 - Has room for a small internal cdrom, but remember you can have an external one that plugs in if you want.
  • SilverStone Milo ML08 - This is exactly the same as the RVZ02, just looks different.
  • SilverStone ML07 HTPC - Also the same as RVZ02
  • Fractal Design Node 202 - Slightly smaller than the silver-stone cases. Wouldn't fit your current HDD, but you don't necessarily need it inside the system. Doesn't have room for a cdrom.

The following box cases are good:

  • Cooler Master Elite 110
  • Cooler Master Elite 130 - It's longer than the 110 but has more space for larger graphics cards and the 110 has a bit that sticks out the back anyway.
  • Fractal Design Core 500 Mini-ITX
  • Fractal Design Node 304 - This is an older version of the core 500, but is available in white and maybe you prefer the look.
  • SilverStone Sugo Series SG13 - With or without the 'mesh' grid on the front. Also comes in white - https://www.pccasegear.com/products/37277/silverstone-sugo-sg13-sff-chassis-metalized-panel-black-white

Small no-graphics card cases (not much in the way of gaming, save $165 on a power supply):

Slightly larger cases:

mITX, mATX

  • Could use server mobo/cpu. But then no update for parents.
  • MiniITX only has the one video card slot.
  • cplonline MiniITX mobos - About $159-$210
  • $175 case, $170 mobo, $100? PSU, $100 RAM, $100 cooler. $200 M.2 SSD. Something like $900 + CPU

NUCs

  • Intel NUC Comparison
  • NUCs only have like 32gb of internal storage. Probably not enough for dual booting Windows+Linux.
  • Versions ending in S have RAM+eMMC installed. Version ending in H do not. Or does it stand for HDD supported? Maybe the new ones are different...
  • An i3-6xxx seems to be about %80 of a i5-6xxx

  • $864 seems like an ok choice. 6th i5 + 8gb ram + Samsung 960 250GB Evo + 1tb hdd
  • $719 for the i3 with less graphics performance. Could leave the internal hdd.
  • $785 i5, no internal hdd
  • $640 i3, no internal hdd
  • i7 only gets like 30fps in bf4 at 1080p...
