Graphene

Graphene | How It's Made

Super Easy Graphene - 21 Mar 2013 - Uses graphite intercolated compound. Hydrogen peroxide.

Dissolving Graphite to get Graphene - Liquid Phase Exfoliation - 22 Jun 2013. How things dissolve. A week ago he said it's the most efficient method. Needs exfoliated/expanded graphite. It's a bowl full with 50g, it's expanded about 200 times. Uses a solvent with %90 ethatolasotate. Type 10 cleaner, 50-100ml. Uses a 50watt sonicator bath for 3 hours (just seems to be a ultrasonic cleaner?). Smells like hairs?

Graphene from table sugar - the Tang Lau Method - 21 Apr 2013. Cooks it in autoclave. Makes a small monolayer of graphene oxide, then gets heated into graphene.

"essentially you use any where between 0.05 and 0.5 M solution of sugar - fructose, sucrose, glucose they all work. You heat it from between 165 - 220 degrees centigrade in an autoclave for between 1 and 7 hours and pour it out. A graphene oxide layer will form the thickness of whic depends on the time you heat it for, the concentration of sugar and the heat of the oven. Once you have got your layer you need to anneal it at 350 degrees and exclude air by wrapping in foil of some kind. I liked the method - I just thought it was rubbish for producing larg amounts - but something to work with."

How To Make Graphene With Soap, Water And A Blender - 25 Apr 2014 - Makes soapy graphene, lower conductivity.

The Easiest Way To Make High Quality Graphene - 15 Jun 2014. Uses a solvent and a harmoniser. 13,000 RPM for 1 hour. 75% Acetone, 24% water. 40g of graphite. 100μm to 5μm, 45μm=325mesh. Then centrifuge it at 1000k rpm. Concentrated 4mg per mm.

Step by Step Method for Making Graphene - 19 Jun 2014 - Needs ultrasonicator. "Achieving concentrated graphene dispersions in water/acetone mixtures by the strategy of tailoring Hansen solubility parameters" 416.75mL of acetone 88.25mL of deionised water 1.5g 325 mesh powdered flake graphite

Graphene From Tea - 30 Sep 2014. Needs some kind of acid and homogenizer. "Silver is unexfoliated graphite.". "Blue grey liquid is graphene solution"

Graphene From Green Tea - 1 Oct 2014. He's using graphene oxide. Just needs stiring for 2 hours. Mentions "green chemistry". Only half a gram per litre ☹

Graphene exfoliated with Tea - Alternative.

Graphene from intercalated graphite part 1. Mixing. - 19 Jan 2016 - He tried a 50w ultrasonic cleaner and it didn't work. Used a blender. Needs acids. Seems to require days.

I haven't used any other methods since I have H2SO4 on hand so I couldn't say if anything else would work better.", "Sodium sulphate"

Expanded carbon

Expanding carbon from Fructose - "just do the same thing but with intercalated graphite and you are there - intercalate the graphite with sulphuric acid - then take your intercalated graphite and repeat this and it will be the Petrik method"

The Microwave Production of Expanded Graphite - Using a microwave to expand graphite produces partially-exfoliated graphene "worms" that are useful in the production of graphene and for making supercapacitor batteries. This method involves microwaving acid-treated graphite to produce expanded graphite. Acid-treated graphite can be made by soaking approximately 10 grams of ~35 mesh flake graphite in 150 mL concentrated sulfuric acid (H2SO4, 98%) together with 50 mL 70% Phosphoric acid (70%) overnight. The acid molecules are small enough to squeeze in between and intercalate the layers of graphene that make up the graphite flakes. The graphite is then placed in a acid-resistant filter paper (PE/PTFE) and washed with copious amounts of deionized (DI) or distilled water several times to remove any excess acid until the pH reaches 7 and is dried overnight or for several hours in a vacuum drier at 60-80 degrees C. The dried acid-treated graphite is then placed in a modified domestic 1000-Watt microwave oven for 1-2 minutes at a time with frequent intermissions in order to remove the expanded graphite and to rearrange the remaining unexpanded graphite. The process is repeated until all the acid-treated graphite is expanded.

Making Carbon Foam Supercapacitor Material from Sugar - used sodium carbonate instead of zinc nitrate because sodium carbonate is a lot safer and easier to get. If you want to use this stuff for supercapacitors, you will need to heat treat it to make it more conductive

Sonicator

DIY Home Made Ultra Sonic Cleaner "UNDER $35 BUCKS" - Uses a sander, does 10k rpms. *No a sonicator*.

  • if you want to make a real ultrasonic device you can hack one of them pet control sonic devices to generate the frequency an hooking it up to a larger high frequency generator
  • THIS IS NOT ULTRASONIC. You need much, much higher frequencies — 20 kHz to 400kHz (or 1.2 million rpm to 2.4 million rpm) to get ULTRAsonic. The higher frequency range has EVERYTHING to do with the cleaning effectivity.
  • the tank needs to be metallic because the plastic absorbs the vibrations...
  • there is a very good DIY on intructables made by grenoble.
  • Great explanation!!! Just to expound, the "machine gun" process is called cavitation for the all my science homies in the house. Non-inertial cavitation to be more exact. The cleaning effect is actually a result of an implosion when the soundwave smashes into the object and creates a low pressure zone. And BTW, I love washing silverware in my ultrasonic cleaner *super lazy + super clean
  • The ultrasonic transducers used for cleaning tanks are a specialist item and are not likely to be found in your average hobbyist catalogues. There are several types sold on ebay though.
  • You should also not remain in the area for any length of time. Even though you can't 'hear' the ultrasound, it's still vibrating your eardrum and prolonged exposure will damage your hearing.
  • Ultrasonic transducers are rated by frequency and wattage. The item you saw in that catalogue is just a 'buzzer' that makes a 'beep' sound when a voltage is applied. (that's no use for this application)

What are these specialist 'transducers'? Are they just a frequency generator?
